Consider these 5 tips as your stepping stone; from prepping ahead of time, enjoying in the moment and cleaning up afterwards β weβve got you covered.
Letβs make every picnics conscious decision one worth celebrating!
Plan what food will you bring
A picnic isnβt complete without some delicious eats and drinks, so why not plan ahead?
Make a list of your favorite snacks β from tiny finger foods to fresh sandwiches.
Then take it one step further by concocting up something special like iced tea or even organic fruit-infused flavored water at home!
That way you can create the perfect summer spread while avoiding single-use packaging from the supermarket.
Buy fruits without any plastic wrap
Picnics are a great opportunity to enjoy some delicious snacks, and what better snack than fresh fruit?
When selecting your treats for the day be sure to opt out of pre-packaged selections which come in disposable bags.
Instead choose bulk items that you can carry in style with an eco-friendly mesh produce bag!
What should you include on a zero-waste picnic?
Get ready to have the most eco-friendly picnic ever β itβs time to stock up on some zero-waste essentials!
Start your shopping list with reusable items like a water bottle, cloth napkins, and snack containers.
Not only will you be helping out Mother Nature but youβll get bonus points for style as well!
- You will need a basket to carry everything. I recommend a classic wicker basket or go for modern options such as insulated baskets or picnic backpacks.
- To bring your homemade meals, you need some Tupperware; the best kind is made of glass. If you want something lighter stainless steel is another excellent option; make sure to purchase a set or individual containers for different meals and portions.
- When it comes to drinks, you want to buy some refillable water bottles; as the weather will be warmer, it is a great idea to use an insulated water bottle to keep your drink cooler longer. Also, donβt forget to include some insulated mugs for coffee or tea.
- Donβt forget the cutlery; you can buy zero-waste bamboo cutlery sets that include napkins or use the cutlery you have at home. Avoid using plastic cutlery; the same concept applies to any dish you may want to bring.
- To reduce waste, donβt use paper napkins or paper towels; get a washable set of cotton napkins, and place them in your laundry washing as soon as you arrive home.
- For your snacks, donβt forget a beeswax wrap or a reusable silicone snack bag that you can wash at home; avoid convenience store snacks that come in plastic packaging. Read more about the benefits of beeswax wrap and how to take of them.
- Donβt forget your picnic blanket to display your meals and drinks; I recommend this extra-large blanket which is easy to clean, waterproof, and multi-purpose as you can use it on the beach as well.
- Finally, add to your zero-waste picnic a super absorbent rag to clean your cutlery and Tupperware, when you are at home, you can properly wash them, but this will keep your basket tidier for the time being.
Pick up all the residues
Letβs all show how much we care for nature.
Whether itβs a hike or an outdoor picnic, bring along some extra bags to collect your trash and recyclablesβit sets such a great example when kids and friends see us do this!
Even little bits of waste can add up, so letβs make sure everything is taken care of before leaving the area β that way everyone gets to enjoy its beauty without any worry.
Compost any leftover
Letβs be sure to pick up any leftovers from our snacks and games β a reusable silicone bag is perfect for collecting them!
Then, when you get home, donβt toss your scraps in the trash.
